Fraunhofer Center for Energy Innovation CEI

Excellence in Energy Systems

UConnHartmanThe mission of the Fraunhofer Center for Energy Innovation (CEI) at the University of Connecticut is to develop advanced technologies related to energy storage, fuel cells, in-stream hydro, power management and distribution through contract research.

The Center was created by Fraunhofer USA, Inc., Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems IKTS, the State of Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), and the University of Connecticut. Upon its founding in 2013, CEI became the seventh Fraunhofer USA research center. Each Fraunhofer research center is partnered with a research university in the U.S. and also with a Fraunhofer Institute in Germany.

CEI researchers – comprising faculty from the University of Connecticut, Fraunhofer and allied research organizations – together with industry partners, focus on research, development and commercialization efforts in four core areas:

  • Batteries and Energy Storage
  • Fuel Cells and Electrolyzers
  • Microgrid Engineering
  • Environmental Technology
